SKILL REFINEMENT DRILL CLINIC
BOYLAN TENNIS CENTER FEBRUARY 2008
After partners competed to hit 10 groundstrokes into the alley from the baseline, Bret Schrama, USPTA-certified teaching pro, brought the group together to explain the proper way to hit a volley.
Bret said that hitting a good, one-handed backhand volley requires gripping the racquet correctly with the dominant hand; supporting the racquet yoke with the non-dominant hand; keeping the wrist of the dominant hand up and firm; touching the chin to the shoulder; and, releasing the support hand when contacting the ball out in front of the body.
Becky Wyant practiced proper grip and form.
Ron Chamberlain, Dixon tennis enthusiast, listened to tips offered by both instructors.
Before beginning a volley drill, Tet Graham checked her grip and racquet face position.
Terry Carlson and Tet Graham hit volleys across the net while shuffling across the court from alley to alley.
Janet Johnson and Ron Chamberlain adjusted their grips during the volley shuffle drill.
Chris Johnson hit a winning volley while playing a game of "Rush-and-Crush." Challenger teams had to hit a winning approach shot, volley and overhead to move to the champion side of the court.

The evening concluded with instructions on serving. Bret told (right-handed) players to stand 45 degrees to the baseline with their left toe pointed at the net post; to point their right elbow up to the sky so they could "scratch their back" with their racquet; to drive the edge of their racquet up to the sky as if pounding a hammer; to give a "high five" at the top of their swing so the face of their racquet is parallel to the net when contacting the ball at 2 o'clock; and, to let their right arm follow through out, across their body and down while their body falls into the court due to weight shift and leg drive.

The members of Rockford Tennis invite YOU to get in the game. Check the Events section of this website for information about our next event : )
